How to Blow into an Ignition Interlock

If you never used an ignition interlock before, you may not know that there is a very specific way to blow into the device. To avoid any inconvenience for you in the future, here is how to properly use an ignition interlock to start your car.

Be Ready.

You need to take a deep breath when you use an interlock, so it is best to not use the interlock if you’re out of breath (i.e. after exercising.) Some foods, mouthwashes, or medicines may make the interlock get a false read, so it is a good idea to rinse your mouth out with water before you start your car.

Place Interlock to Your Mouth.

Be sure the interlock is face on. Don’t blow into it from any angle.

Learn The Blow / Hum Technique.

In order for the breathalyzer to work, you need to provide 1.5 liters of a breath sample. This means that you’ll need to breathe for a couple of seconds. It has to be one continuous breath.  The device won’t read your breath properly if you start and stop.

Take a deep breath and blow into the device. After three seconds, start humming. The best way to get a proper hum is to say “who” into the interlock as you blow.

There are some interlocks that may have a beeping sound to let you know when it is time to hum. Otherwise, blow for three seconds and then start humming.

Don’t Forget!

You will need to take a rolling retest after you’ve started your car. It’s a good idea to pull over when you take the retest so ensure maximum safety on the road.

Don’t Worry.

If you feel as if you might not breathe properly in the interlock, don’t worry. The technician who installs your interlock will give you an extensive training session to ensure you know how to use it properly.
